trouble sharing files between a network

I am trying to help someone out. He has a folder that is on a Windows 7 laptop that he wants to share with a XP desktop.

I am having a little trouble. In XP, it shows the laptop under workgroup computers but I can not open it. It says I do not have permission to use this network resource. I turned the firewall off and that did not help. What do I need to do to be able to share the folder?

Do both computers have the same workgroup name? Did you run the network setup wizard on the XP computer?

you need to go into the win 7 pc and right click the folder that you want to share. go to the security tab and clcik edit, then add, then advanced, then find now, scroll to everyone, select it and click ok and then ok again then apply and ok, and apply and ok one last time and then go to the sharing tab and make sure that the box is checked for sharing and click the permissions button to make sure that the word everyone is in there. if not then do the same thing i just said , but for this

im not questioning any of the answers. how ive done it and never a problem with sharing hardware like printer or drives. Create the workgroup as explained. make sure you have a computer name attached. what ever it is. Mama, laptop or what ever. i always went to start, right click explorer find a directory, drive and share. always worked. no questions asked. did it with xp pro for years and recently updated to windows 7 pro. no problems.
went to a xp and started up. control panel for printer and right click the printer and share. no problem.
