When i go to install windows from the xp cd, i click on the c: drive to install it and it comes up with the screen saying:

Setup must write some startup files to the following disk:
76317MB Disk 0 at ID 1 on bus 0 on atapi (MBR)

However the disk does not contain a XP compatible partition
.

I have been to the recovery part of the XP install disk and checked the disk for errors and it sometimes comes up with "the disk might contain inrecoverable errors" I have reformatted it and the HDD is still not recognised when i boot up the computer to install XP.
It only comes up once im in the XP cd ready to install it.

I have also gone into the bios and tried to make it recognise it.
Any hwlp would be greately appreciated.

Have you removed the partitions and repartioned the drive? If so, you could always try a low level format(just search around for a good utility) the repartition/format the drive. Also, don't do quick formats, try a full format.

You also didn't state if something caused the problem or if it's a new build... If it is new, you might want to double check all the settings within the bios, for the drive and what not.

Sounds like the drive is fried, the cable is off or the power is not connected to the drive. Obviously hard to tell from over here, but that would be the place to start if the BIOS is not recognizing it and you set it to auto detect.
