Trouble with laptop networking

*This thread was in the Laptop section of forum, but got no responses so i thought i would try in here. Hope this is ok.*

Hey people,

Hope your holidays were good.

So I have a Dell XPS and i seem to be having trouble connecting to the internet but my own. I tried looking at my antivirus settings (Bitdefender) couldn't see any restrictions here. Tried looking at my browser settings (Firefox) couldn't see anything in there. Tried looking at network connections, definately can't find anything in there.

So i can connect to the networks (entering the key and what not). It says that i have an internet connection under the network status, but when i try any websites or programs to connect to the internet, nothing. It acts like no internet connection. As for this problem just recently happening, i can't really say. Mainly because i have never noticed before. I don't really use my laptop as a "laptop" (mobile) lol.

Some specs for you:

Dell XPS (Bought in 2011)
i7 2720QM
16GB Ram
Windows 7

Any suggestions?

If you need any more info, just let me know.

Thanks

So to clarify when you use your own wireless the internet works fine, however if you connect to someone else's it doesn't?

My first guess is you have a static IP defined that works fine with your network. If this is the case change it back to Dynamic or automatic and see what happens.

Make sure you don't have an IP address set manually. Make sure your tcp/ip settings are for to obtain ip address and dns servers automatically.

Sorry for the such long delay in reply, I've been preoccupied.

First off i will try and explain my situation again, try and make it more clear:

So at home, my internet works fine. Connects to my network and detects internet, can log on to the internet using browser and various internet related programs.

When trying to connnect to other networks (for internet use), laptop will connect fine to the network, will detect that there is internet, when it comes to accessing the internet through browser or program it acts like there is no internet connection.

Now it kinda sounds like you both are guessing that it's because of my proxy settings, in my browser this is set to auto already. If this isn't what you are talking about, could you clarify.

I'm going back to this statement of mine earlier. If it connects in one place but doesn't in another, usually means not getting a correct IP address. Do you know how to check your tcp/ip settings?

Hey John,

Sorry i misunderstood you in the first place. Anyway, no i do not know how to check my TCP/IP settings. How would i go about doing that?

Thanks for your help

Asssuming this is windows 7, go into the network and sharing center, click on local area connection, click on properties, highlight internet protocol version 4 (tcp/ipv4) click on properties. Make sure both ip address and dns server boxes are both checked.

Sorry for the delay.

Hey John,

I am pretty sure that this was the problem as it wasn't set to auto. But i will confirm that it is fixed whenever I can.

Thanks again for your help.

Yeah, if it wasn't set to auto what happens is that in one place it will get internet because you have automatically assigned an IP that the router will be compatible with. Where as when attached to another router it won't be. Say for instance it was set manually to 192.168.1.105. It will connect to routers with IP address 192.168.1.1 but not any other router that doesn't have that internal IP. Say for instance 192.168.2.1
