trouble with NFSU2

so im just now getting the game cause its cheap, behind the times i know...but anyway, i got it installed and naturally i have everything cranked to the max, my system can take it so why not..

after a bit of playing the display will freeze, usually the first time after it sits a bit it will go back to normal and you can keep playing, the second time the screen will usually go black and you can still hear the game running in the backround, you can still control the car and everything, you just cant see it...

heres my theory, i ran ATItool while playing and received a max temp of 110C yes i know thats hot as hell....the cooler on my card sucks, its the passive heatpipe cooler...so im thinking the card is overheating while playing, after you play you cant activate the "show 3d" in atitool either...it has an error..so methinks shes gettin too hot. any thoughts?

also after it does this its like my vid card gets put into retard mode, for example i cant even smoothly scroll down on a webpage, its uber choppy..if i restart everything works fine.

well i ghettoed up my pc to test the theory, put a househould fan blowing on the video card with the case open...kept the temps at 98C max...so it ran fine, still pretty dang hot, but not too hot...but i dont want to half to do that all the time, so ill be investing in a real cooler eventually.

its supposedly "safe" up to 120C....my guess is it shuts 'er down before that though, at least apparently so...i cant believe they would put a heatpipe cooler on a such a powerful card...at least it was powerful in its day, now its eh...

i also dont understand why i played HL2 with no issues whatsoever, and i throw this at it and it gets all crazy

nope.. my 6200 (256mb) can get up to 150 degee celcius.
with that nvidia card i can set a gpu slowdown temerature, so itll cool down.
i dont know if thats also for ati cards, but i think a new cooler would do miracle ;)

yeah most definetely, as a temporary solution i underclocked the card and it runs fine. but we just cant have underclocking for much longer

u sure? i had a 6200 for about a month and whenever i played star wars galaxies it would shut down the computer. i called SOE, turns out it was cuz my video card was overheating. I noticed all that was on my card was a heatpipe, so i returned it, got the 6600 for 60 bucks more, with a heatsink/fan combo, and has worked fine ever since.

Your case is verry similar to mine. When i returned my 6200 i looked at ati cards, and now, all their cards seem to have fans on them by standard. i actualy remember looking at the x800 and it now comes with a fan. what i would do if i were you, is buy a new x800 which would come with a fan, return your older x800 in that box. i did this with my mobo from newegg and it worked (exept my mobo was shorted, so a little different) if you end up doing that and it dosent work, please dont blame me, it would make me feel sad :( . hope this helps :D

EDIT: btw, star wars has worked just fine since then

my card is the Gigabyte version, and i bought it used off newegg, so i cant really return it...my plan is to just buy an Artic Cooling cooler for it whenever i have 40 bucks or so to lay around.
