trouble with Sony dvd drive

I have a Sony DRU-810A drive that I installed myself. Also there is another dvd drive that came with the computer.

The problem is sometimes when I go to open the Sony drive, I will have to press the button several times before it will open. Each time I press it, it will try to come out but doesn't. Right now it will not open at all unless I stick a paper clip in the little hole to manually open it. When I do that, I have to restart the computer to get it working.

What is the deal? Is my drive going caput? Do you think it is time to buy a new one? The drive is less than a year old.

If I do have to buy a new one, which brand are good ones to look for? Also, what is lightscribe? Is it worth getting one with lightscribe?

if you're say in the BIOS, do you have this problem? Is it only when you get to windows? I've seen software give similar problems, but also it's not too uncommon for drives to give out...

The thing is I will be using the drive when it will quit working and if I right click on the drive icon in my computer and go to properties then hardware, it says that it is working properly.

I have not gone into the bios yet. I may do that tomorrow. What do I need to do in the bios, anything in particular?

I'm just trying to see if this is software(windows) or hardware related. So no, you don't have to do a think in the bios. You could even disconnect your HD so it won't boot or boot to a CD...it's all the same :P

Okay I have been messing around with the drive a bit. I opened and closed the drive several times in a row and sometimes it would stick open I would have to press the button several times before it would close. To me that seems like it would the drive is going bad. Am I wrong?

BTW, I did not have a cd in the drive while doing this.

I think its the problem with the drive itself. Its not that uncommon for a DVD drive to bust about 10 months after purchase. Either way, try updating firmware to see if the problemo goes away.

Lightscribe is a feature that allows you to print labels with the DVD drive. You just need lightscribe compatible discs.

How do I update the firmware? I tried updating the driver but it said it couldn't find a better match. Is that the same thing?
