Troubled XBOX 360 given to me

I don't know anything about XBOX, but my wife's brother offered me his son's old XBOX 360.

I don't have any games, and I don't know how it works but I put a DVD movie in it and it plays fine for about an hour and the screen starts trying to pixel in a lime green color and freezes.

He said his son would play a game and the game would freeze and he would have to restart the game, that why he bought his son a new XBOX.

Does any one have clue what would cause the XBOX to freeze during movie or during a game.

All the lights work and I've read about the RED circle of death, but this XBOX does not have that problem, just the freeze ups.

Thanks

The optical drive could just be going bad on it. That or it is overheating in some way, shape, or form.

I took the XBOX over to my shop and used my air compressor with a tiny gun and blew out the unit. Lots of dust came out. I kept blowing it out until no new dust was seen.

I used my dvd cleaner in the player and let it run 30 minutes on attomatic.

So far the unit has worked perfectly with two dvd movies and I've gone online with it and so far again it works great.

I'll try ro pick up a used 360 game to see if that part of the system works.

I'm guessing the hard drive is simply used for online game storage which I'm not going to take advantage of.

My thoughts were if I could get the box to work I would give it to my nephew thats six years old.

Again I don't know anything about XBOX 360 games. Does only 360 games play on a 360?

What is a good clean family game for a 6 year old boy?

Thanks for the help

The hard drive stores player profiles and game saves, not necessarily online stuff. You can also save entire games to the drive, but you still need the original disc in the optical drive.

All 360 games play on a 360, and most Xbox games do. Full list is here:

There are plenty of sporting and racing games for the Xbox and Xbox 360. Take a look around at them and see what they have for family friendly.
