This has me baffled. Hard to tell you system specs because I've changed so much. First, the story.
New system, install XP, random reboots after which the computer reboots before memory post, a few seconds between reboot, over and over. Turn off, let it sit, boots up fine and runs for 10 minutes to 4 hours and then repeat.
So I start troubleshooting, in other words change one thing, run it till it crashes, then change another thing. This is what I've gone through:
one of the first things I did was pull everything non-necessary, secondary hard drive, speakers, webcam, etc, so I have just a keyboard, mouse, 1 stick of RAM, boot drive
6 sticks of RAM in single configurations, 32MB to 256MB PC100-PC133
5 video cards, matrox, geforce2, ATI AGP, some old PCI
3 power supplies, generic crap, a new antec
3 power cords, a few wall outlets
Heres the motherboard, no idea what it is. It's about 900mhz, weird that the heat sink is kept on with 2 screws not clips. I have 2 identical motherboards and I've swapped them, both have the same problem.
Now here's the spooky part. The computer reboots when I get near it. It'll sit there running nicely for 4 hours, then I'll walk up and it reboots. Consistently, it'll run fine till I walk up to it. Usually just before I sit in the chair and grab the mouse it goes. Fooled me at first cause after 4 hours it reboots when I wiggled the power cord, so in goes the shiny new antec and new cord, and I figure out it reboots when I walk past it, touching nothing by the way just walking past the system, which sits on a vinyl floor.
Another system on the floor across the room has had weird issues too, for a long, long time. Driver issues, my drag/drop dissappears. Every second bootup takes a full 5 minutes (normal 30 seconds), sometimes hangs while going through IDE devices on boot. I mention it because I've replaced a LOT of hardware in this machine over the last year (mobos, RAM, hard drives, video cards, everything 3 or 4 times over) and still wierd issues persist.
I'm thinking EMI in this room? Anyone heard of that?
Any ideas are welcome.
