TROUBLESHOOTING: onboard video

if onboard video isn't disabled before the installation of an agp card, will the agp card not function?

pretty sure the onboard video on a friend of mine's computer is dead. installed an agp card, and the monitor had the picture. a couple of hours later after the computer had been off, it didn't work (monitor stayed black and never responded). i can't figure out for the life of me what the deal is.... even brought the computer home with me to make sure it wasn't the monitor...

edit: agp card is the mx4000

There's no way to have two AGP cards going at once(onboard and slot) I'd think by default it would disable the onboard video if there's a card present, but I guess it could just keep on using it and just not the slot...

Does it work without the card anymore? Have you tried resetting the CMOS and just using onboard again?

no, it doesn't work without the card. i've tried resetting the cmos, and neither the slot nor onboard work....

Sounds like a dead mobo. Remove any other cards on the board and try it with only one stick of RAM(if he has more) swapping with others. Perhaps try another power supply if possible.

if it worked for the brief period i described, how would the mobo or psu have went dead? hopefully nothing i did, but i don't know what i could have possibly done?

only one stick of ram, and i tried switching for another stick i had lying around to no avail...

if the onboard video was dead in the first place, is this a sign that the mobo could be going dead as well?

just thought of something...

we had a big thunderstorm, and my friend recalls it stopping working sometime close to after this storm..

their monitor doesn't work, i'm pretty sure it's dead..

pretty sure the onboard video is dead..

does it sound to you like everything was zapped, or would it even turn on in this case?

Try a new power supply if possible, but if the onboard video did actually go out, there's a good chance something else was about to go out as well...

tried another PSU, although i can't be positive the PSU i tried wasn't dead itself. it came from a dying system, although further troubleshooting on that system led me to believe it wasn't the psu.. so maybe the psu isn't dead. point is there is a chance it's dead, though.

went and bought a new power supply...

same thing with both the onboard video and the agp card. after a couple of tries it did work, however.. (only once) .. then i turned it off, and it didn't work again.

went out and bought a pci gc as well. same thing. if i take the ram out it beeps sequentially. now, however, when the computer turns on i get a single beep (even with the ram in). there is a blue led under the power switch and it doesn't come on now. the power switch doesn't work either. it appears the connectors are plugged in for them.

emachines t2982 is the pc, btw.

another thing i just noticed: when the pc first turns on the optical drive has power to eject the tray, but a few seconds later it has no power and must be pushed in to close...

since the power switch doesn't work, i turn the pc on by unplugging/plugging in power supply cord (that goes to wall). in other words, the pc is in the on position at all times. even if i unplug power switch connector it still boots.
