I went start- run-msconfig - startup . Then unchecked some of the programs I didnt want to start up. When I restarted the computer I got this message-

This is the message I get-

You have used the Sysetem configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts.

the system configuration utility is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode causing this message to be displayed and tne utility to run everytime Windows starts.

Choose the normal startup mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changes usng the system configuration utility.

Then a ticked box- saying- dont show this message or launch the system when windows start

And and ok box at the bottom.

What should I do?

That's a normal "annoying" pop up to simply put a check mark on and close any time you use the msconfig. Once you make any change(s) there you always see that upon restart. Once you have unchecked anything you chosen the selective startup option rather then the default loadup of "everything". Nothing to worry about there.

Just click on "don't show this message again" and carry on... But the better thing to do, if you want the changes to be permanent, is to edit the registry.

There's a program available on Technet that allows you to do this in a very easy fashion, but I'm having a brainfart and can't remember the name. It's also very effective at getting rid of malware.

Anytime you go to use the msconfig afterwards you are still going to see a popup screen after clicking on the "restart system now" button or later when you reboot the system anyways. But how often do you generally make changes there? Guranteed not as much as having to disable and re-enable certain items like PC-cillin in order to clean + report spam and disable after.

ok so I checked the box and pressed Ok.

That was the right thing to do, right?

Also what is that run thing used for? And msconfig stand for microsoft configuration?

Yes microsoft configuration. Command is like the manual way to load stuff. Like you can enter c:/ and it would load C: drive.

The one thing to remember when going in there to make changes is many programs like antivirus utilities will have services running in the services section as well as the startup group. To prevent disabling any default and needed Windows background services the option to "hide all Microsoft services" box needs to checked off before going into there.
