hi everyone, i posted a long while ago about an external hard drive but my money situation fell and i couldnt afford a new hard drive until now, so id like some opinions again please i have some choices that i think look pretty good, but i have no experience at all with external hard drives so id like your help please.

1.seagate 200gb
2.simple tech 250gb
3.western digital my book 250gb
4.another western digital
5.i/o 250gb
6.another western digital 320gb

any oppinions and/or other reccomendations are very very very much appriciated, as you might be able to see id like to get as much space for as little, i think id like to have a 250gb at the least very minimum 200gb. thanks a whole bunch!!!:D

I would go with the WD 320gb model just for the price savings there over what was seen at newegg. The lowest price on a WD model was $134- there. The Simple Tech and I/O models are the off brands there. I already am a WD fan to add to that. :D

yeah i was leaning more towards a western digital, i got a 180 gig internal drive for my desktop, and it works really well, i have a mac laptop and a windows desktop do you know if the wd hard drive is cross platform compatible?

i couldnt find instructions in that link you sent me? is it hard to format the hard drive, and if i did would it work for both operating systems? and would i have to do that for all hard drives or could i get another one that is cross platform compatible?

get one from circuit city they have a 30 day money back guarantee if it doesnt work... get a western digital though, they have very good cool hard drives...
im using two internals configured in RAID 0 i get like 110MB/s transfer rate max and no lower than 60MB/s... and they run at like 25-30C which is very cool.

they all seem good though, i guess it depends on how much you're willing to pay. you can always bring it back if you aren't satisfied.

did you think about buying an internal and getting a hard drive case for it? you can get a nice USB one for like $15 i think...

thanks a bunch for the links and help, i might build one im not sure but do you know anything about the jump between windows and mac, how or even if i could get it to work with both?

i have an external enclosure i put together with a wd 250 inside. my buddy borrowed it to move all his files from his old pc to his new macbook pro. it was plug and play all the way. i don't know what anyone else is talking about, we plugged it in to both systems, and it worked.

I never said any detailed instructions were there. Tips, advices, news, links would be the things seen there. One site that should be far more useful is found at http://www.macwindows.com/disks2.html and http://www.macwindows.com/solution.html

95% of the time USB is plug and play on a Mac. you can go back and forth in most cases. i think someone already said this but im just adding support.

Usb devices are so common now that both OSs have had to make improvements in the basic Plug'n'Play support. There's a few Mac users around here somewhere that givve you some other advice on dual booting Windows and Mac together. They may advise installing the two OSs on separate drives rather then trying to dual OS on one.

yeah i dont plan on making my new hard drive a boot drive, but i saw that deal on ebay and thats a pretty good deal.

Well you saw the retail price at newegg. And that is one of the best places pricewise to look for hardwares. If that's a brand new drive grab it before it's lost!
