Ok, so hopefully this is the right area for tv's, this is monitors so hopefully thats close enough!

I need to buy a tv for a family member, basics of what I need is 50 to 60 inch, used for watching tv shows, movies and playing on game consoles, $1000 budget including warranty and any setup, sound included (they dont want to buy a sound system), needs to be mountable on a base on a tv table or on a wall. The room is about 30x20 with the tv at the long end, they're in the north Houston Texas area.

It doesn't have to have internet access, 3D, phone connectivity or anything like that because honestly they'll never figure it out or even realize it has those features.

It absolutely has to be available from a brick-and-mortar like sears, best buy, frys (or the like) as they want a local store for returns or warranty claims... and I need to get it this weekend if possible.

What should I look for in the specifications for things like black contrast, resolution, etc...? What brands would you recommend?

Thanks for any input! I know that kind of a lot to ask on such short notice so just let me know what you can. I'd just do the research but its been years since I bought my tv and I'm not as familiar with tv's anymore and I dont have the time to learn everything then try to pick the best to suit their needs.

I've got to say that I've had great luck with Vizio's. Pretty much all bigger tv's will have internet capabilities now. You can probably get a 60" Vizio for that budget.

I'll be getting the 65" probably next year.

Thanks john.

There are so* many options for tvs anymore. Led, lcd, plasma, curved or flat screen, etc.... it's hard to know if you're getting a good one.

Definitely want LED. Plasma is old technology and expensive to fix. Warranty prices are higher for plasmas just for that reason alone. I have a 42 inch currently in the living room and it's too small. A 65 inch would fit nice where the 42 inch is. Maybe tax time next year.

I went to best buy and just compared them by playing some videos on a few different ones. I highly recommend doing this because they don't generally give a latency rating to televisions and sometimes they look jittery or have ghosting even if the "specs" look good.
