Trying to Fix A Laptop

I am fixing a laptop for a friend, they have a son who tried to use a windows 7 disk to upgrade this computer?? They are not tech savvy so I am not sure what they were going after. Anyways, when I try and boot up, it has a BSOD at the loading bars, but its so fast I cannot read the error message, this is the case with safe modes, regular, and last known. They only way I was able to bring the computer back up was to do a system restore. After this, it would crash agin, but when choosing last known configuration that worked, it would work. After you shut it down with no changes it goes back to the above. I really have no idea what I can do for this. I looked through the error log, and the last two changes were an update and a new driver for iphone. Is it possible to rollback these updates? Or what can I do to isolate the problem?

the computer is a Dell Inspiron 1420, Windows vista HP, and its on service pack 1. This computer has been like this for serveral months which is the reason for this issue. Does anyone have a guide on reading the error messages, or suggestions as to what the problem may be. Also when I try and do a safe mode it stops on crcdisk.sys and will either hang or BSOD, and the hard drive passed HD Tunes surface test I am going to check it again. Thanks..

It can be tricky changing a laptops operating system. Unless they got the Windows 7 disk from Dell that was written specifically for a Dell Inspiron 1420 you are going to have problems. Laptops require special software drivers and you aren't going to get them from a regular Windows 7 upgrade disk. I would call Dell and ask them if they have a Windows 7 installation disk for the Dell Inspiron 1420.

If Dell does not, your best option in my opinion is just restoring the default operating system with an installation disk specifically written for the Dell Inspiron 1420.

I am sorry, what I meant to say was my friends son tried to upgrade to 7. He messed it up, and its having trouble. I am not looking to upgrade, possibly move it down. But for the time being I am trying to figure out what is going on with it. What can I do to resolve the issue? I need to isolate it and I can't tell if its a driver issue or from the updates. It keeps crashing after updates, or restarting the computer. I found that if I update I cannot get it to boot at all, but if I don't update SOMETIMES it will boot. Its a pain and I can't isolate what the problem is.

ahh no, it is the same, at least i had no problem upgrading what so ever, windows 7 has pretty much all the drivers and the others are easy to find on the internet if you know your hardware on the laptop. (or easier go to i.e. dell website and just find support for you laptop, download and install, done )

But i would agree just reinstall and see if that fixes it. the windows updates should not really do anything. the BSOF does prevent things from destroying your system so something is definitely trying to do that.

I have upgrade my son's dell inspiron 1420 with Windows 7 ultimate 32bits from vista 32bits OS without a hitch. The only thing I did extra is to change the 1gb ram to 2 gb ram.
