I was installing XP just fine on my dell dimension 8300 when i got to the stage where it wanted my Serial Key. couldnt find the number anywhere so i had to look all over the house for it and when i got it and got back to the computer my dog had tripped over the cord and it had shut off.

So i turn it on and tell it to boot from disk so i can do the whole thing over only now all of a sudden it says there isnt a hard drive even though twenty minutes ago it picked it up fine..

im assuming something got screwed up when the power went out halfway through installing windows but i dont no what.

Any ideas?

open the computer and see if any cables got pulled out. I assume you know a bit about computers?

Look for a red cable, or a long, flat grey cable. (either SATA or IDE, i'm not familiar with dells)

Sometimes components just need to kind of be reset. Maybe try turning it on and off with the drive disconnected, then connect and try again. If it's SATA, confirm the drivers are being loaded correctly.
