trying to restore old dell

My old Dell computer died on me a few months ago and at the time I didn't really think anything of it since it was a Motherboard problem. I have since then gotten a new lap top as of just this last weekend.
But my mother has told me that she would be interested in taking the old lap top and finding a new motherboard for it and using it for her self. I would like to try and help her as much as I can but I am not very computer savvy when it comes to tech. stuff.
What I really want to know is what kinds of motherboards would be best suited for a Dell lap top. I sadly don't have the specifics on what kind of Dell it is right now since the last time I had it I loaned it to my father whom wanted to take a look at it and see if it was a motherboard problem or if there was anything else wrong with it.
I should be picking it up from him by the end of this week or early in the weekend. If its any more helpful I can put up the make number and what kind of Dell it is. I know that we won't be planning on sending this computer off if it is to be worked on. We have plenty of people in town that can open it up and work on it, what I want to do is just get the specifics on what kind of motherboard I should be looking for to actually put in and if I should have her do anything else like up grad the memory on the thing as well.
Any advice would be great thanks!

I would assume that you will have to go through Dell to get a new motherboard for a laptop. Not sure though. What make and model is the laptop?

I don't really know the specifics like I said before since I havn't even seen the computer in several months. I think that its a Dell 8200, I don't know if I would have to send it in though Dell or not...maybe I can just see if I can order the motherboard itself and then see if anyone localy can put it in for us.
I'll have more specifics later on this weekend when I get the lap top back.

Find out what model system it is. Call Dell and see if you can get the motherboard replaced, might cost a lot though, they charge our company about $550 for a Latitude D600 mobo

Well I already contacted Dell, when it broke and they told me a rough estimate of how much it would cost...what I am wondering now is if I nessicarly have to get it done though them, or if I can just take care of it myself from home. My mother's PC at home is even worse then mine so if I could give her something nice I would really like it. I just don't know if I can or not since it might add up to so much. I am thinking of just going around town and seeing if any of the computer repair places in town can work on anything like a Dell or like I said before if I could just order the motherboard it self from dell and then have someone other then them put it in. Not sure if that will work or not but still would like to give it a try.

Replacing a motherboard can be very expensive. I wanted a motherboard for a VERY old IBM Thinkpad replaced and I found out it would cost $500. At that price I would of been much better off buying a new computer.
