Trying to tighten up slack on security

Up till now, have been very leanient on the security of my computer, having the whole, "it won't happen to me..." attitude.Just a few days ago, my friends computer crashed due to him not downloading the necessary protection. The only kind of software I have downloaded is AOL spyware and Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition. I am willing to download as many other protection software as I need, can someone throw some out there that you guys have found helpful??

Sygate Personal Firewall
Ad-aware
Norton Anti Virus

use windows firewall, thats why its there. he is probably behind a router which also has a firewall.

AOL is spyware. LOL
And, their security software is still useless.

Symantec has ruined most of Peter Norton's good work. Don't touch it.
