Trying to upgrade ram (REALLY CONFUSED)

I have no idea how much or what kind of ram my computer can hold. I went to crucial.com and had a motherboard scan and it gave me this:
Computer Manufacturer
Gateway
Motherboard Manufacturer
Intel
Motherboard Model
D845GERG2
CPU Manufacturer
GenuineIntel
CPU Family
Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz
CPU Speed
2399 MHz
Front-Side Bus Speed
100 MHz
Currently Installed Memory
256MB
Maximum Memory Capacity
2048MB
Total Number Of Memory Slots
2 (2 banks of 1)
Available Memory Slots
1

And said i could hold a whole slew of ram types. However The ram in my comptuer is 256mb ddr
32mx64
sdram
pc2700
cl 2.5

and it doesn't say ddr sdram like that there is one place on the ram that says sd ram adn the other has pc2700 ddr or something like that. Don't remember the company that made it, ill get that next time i open my comptuer up (can't right now.
Also i have been told by a different scan that my computer can only hold 512mb of ram, and i have been told that the type of ram i have only comes in 256mb sticks.

my question is can i hold other types of ram than this and are there bigger sticks than 256mb. If you want/need a more accurate description of what the ram says i can get that for you. Thanks!

got the exact things stated on my ram

company: infineon
32mx64 sdram
pc2700u-25330-AO
256mb, ddr, 166mhz, cl 2.5

does this come in sticks bigger than 256mb ? and is the mother boards description right when saying i can hold 2 gigs of ram? And how do i know what kinds is it only this kind?

Yes you can get sticks larger than 256 MB. You can see tested memory (untested doesn't mean it won't work) here:
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rg2/rg2_internalmem.htm
The motherboard specs say that the board hasn't been validated past 2.0 GB. You most likely won't need more than 1 GB anyway and for more than 2 GB you'd need a 2 GB stick (you only have 2 dimm slots) which is pretty damn expensive.

DDR is a type of SDRAM and PC2700 is the speed.

I suggest that you get another stick of PC2700. Anything slower and it'll slow your current memory down. Anything faster won't improve performance with your current memory.

If your motherboard can support up to 2GB and you have 2 DIMM slots, then the max single stick of memory useable is 1GB.

Yes, and my statement was meant to mean that you probably wouldn't want to add more than 2 GB even if it were possible. And the tech paper on his motherboard only said the board hasn't been verified with more RAM.

so can i put anything that is pc2700 into my comp? does it need to be made by the same company? have the same organization of 23mx64? anything like that?

btw thanks for all the help so far
