Turn power on/off

I have a HP 17in wide screen monitor that the on/off switch button is beginning to mess up. Will it hurt anything to turn the power to the monitor off and on, or does it need power all the time? Does a computer need to have power to it all the time, or can it be plugged and unplugged? Have heard of people who have comp, monitor and printer on one line, with a switch to turn power to everything on/off. It would protect comp from lightening and power surges. Or would it damage my comp to turn it off or unplug it?

I dont really understand your question... are you asking if its ok to turn power off to your monitor while the pc is still on? If thats the case no it wont hurt anything. Your monitor does not need constant power while the computer is on.
 
What I need to know is can I put my computer, monitor and printer on one line and cut everything off/on with one switch, without shutting down everything first.

Of course not! Unless you wish to have missing files, partitions dying, and many crashes. If is the monitor itself only, turn off EVERYTHING first, except the monitor, then you can use then on/off switch. What is happening with the switch anyways?

Bad, Bad, Bad idea! Like previous post, ALWAYS shut down the pc before you cut the power. Why not just leave it on all the time? Then you dont have to worry about a switch.

Then you have to worry about: Dust and cooling.

As long as you turn off everything first, then use the power switch, your fine.
 
Thats true, but I understand his question to mean his on/off switch is not working, so that would take care of that problem till another fix is found.
 
Can't you just unplug the PC from the wall when you're "done?"

The monitor has an on/off switch about the size of a pencil, its a touch type behind a thin film. Its getting harder to turn it off/on, have to keep pushing and rubbing on spot until it works. Probably will just plug and un plug monitor because otherwise it works perfect. Will continue to shut down comp in normal way.

So it's an button or sensor?
 
It seems to be a button, it has five control functions, all seem to be buttons under a thin plastic cover to prevent dust from entering. I haven't taken it apart so it could be a sensor.
