I have a Compaq Presario SR1053wm comp. The monitor outlet is a VGA. I have a Emerson LC320EM1F tv. I have a VGA to HDMI cable connecting the two, and an audio cable connected. I can hear the comp shut down through the tv, but have been unable to receive any video. Should it work? What can I do to make it work?

At some point you have to have a conversion from analog VGA to digital HDMI. I'm not familiar with your computer but unless it can give a digital output on the VGA pins, the cable will not work. The online spec only refers to VGA (monitor). You need a converter. I suspect your cable is useless - you would need VGA to VGA and HDMI to HDMI on either side of the converter (or whatever the converter uses).

Yes, going from a DVI output to HDMI input is digital to digital, same standard. HDMI can carry audio but DVI cannot so you still need your separate audio. You will still need an output to your monitor so have to provide 2 DVI signals if you don't want to be swopping cables. Probably best to get card with 2 outputs but I've no experience there. Edit: Assumes your monitor has DVI + VGA inputs. If VGA only then you need a card with VGA + DVI.

If you go this route, there are a few issues between graphic card and hdtv resolutions. Plenty of guides on the Net about that.

Anyone have any recommendations for a good video card to be able to connect to tv? I don't play any high tech games. I really don't know that much about the cards. Are some of them audio only? I would like a good one that doesn't cost a lot.
