TV over network

Hey folks,

i was just thinking... say you have a computer with a tv tuner, or any tv tuner that is capable of being plugged into a network... can the tv signal then be "streamed" over the network, allowing any computer on that network to watch any channel simultaneously?

eg: tv arial----> [set top box or computer] ---->network

VLC is what you need, it can take just about any video signal (be it from a file, DVD, TV Tuner, etc.) and stream it over a network. This works because VLC just takes the video and transcodes it to a format of your choosing so you can play it on other devices (even an Xbox360/PS3 if you set it correctly)

This does not stream the raw video feed straight through, it converts it so your CPU will take a bashing while it converts the video on-the-fly.

that looks pretty good!

so say i have that software on a computer in my lounge, streaming tv over the network... if i'm watching it on a computer in my bedroom, will i be able to change channels from my bedroom?

no, since you aren't in direct control over the device, you won't be able to unless you find a way to change channels by some kind of remote access to the main computer.
