Two computers, both on ethernet cables but different results on speedtest.net

Hello

I have two computers, one desktop the other laptop and both connected with an ethernet cable to the modem.

I recently upgraded my internet from 30mb to 120mb.
Before the upgrade I ran several tests at speedtest.net and the results were always around 30mb/31mb on both computers at the same time.

Now that I have 120mb the same test on the desktop yields around 75mb right after the computer starts while the laptop gets to around 90mb.

Does anyone have a clue about why this difference?
I think I understand why we can't get 120mb, what I don't understand is why we don't have the same speed on both computers.

Thanks in advance!

1. Network card issue
2. Driver issue
3. Cabling issue

So try updating the lan drivers first. How old are the pc's?

Hi, thanks for the quick answer.

The laptop is 1 year old and the desktop is around 2 years old.

How do I update the lan drivers?

Go into device manager and look under network adapters and you will see your lan adapter. You will need to visit the pc makers website if its a store bought pc or the motherboard manufacturer website if its a custom build pc in order to download the correct lan drivers.

ok this should be my adapter: gigabit intel 82566DM
I have successively updated it to the latest driver.
If the outdated driver was the issue should I just reboot the computer now and then run a test?

Well my girlfriend's getting around 90mb on her laptop :p

They're making 100mb standard speed now here in Portugal.
With prices starting from 45€ which should be around 60$ on the states.

Back to my little issue:
I ran a test this morning and got around 60mb. I notice that sometimes the download speed is inconsistent and I wouldn't be too surprised if I didn't had the other pc reaching 90mb on every test.

I don't know if it's relevant but both get 8mb upload speed, as we should.

It just could be a hardware limitation(modem, router, network adapter) not really sure. Are you running an updated cable modem? Not sure if docsis 3.0 is in your area or not.

The router I was provided by the ISP is a fancy one and ready for high speed connections. I get the feeling this is a hardware limitation on my computer, as you said.

I'll leave it be for now and hope that the next pc I buy overcomes this limitation :)

Thank you for your time and for the help you provided me with.
