Two more linux Questions.

Ok I work at a computer shop and were tired of our tech machine getting viruses and stuff from the other computers and we've been wanting (well I have been) to put a linux distro on it. What is the best distro for a tech machine or they all about the same from that perspective.

I was also curious to which linux distro has the most special effects (eye candy)

The distros I have tried and are still using are:

Ubuntu 8.04
Dream Linux 3.5 (2nd favorite)
Linux XP
OpenSuse 11.1
Fedora 10
Debian 500
Mandriva 2009 (current favorite)

I'm also downloading Macpup 412 right know and I'm going to try it.

I love linux and everything about it. I want to get my Linux degree and all that. Just so fascinated by it.

linux degree ? linux certifications are not in desktops, it's mostly server ends.
It's a whole lot of stuff and not what you think

Honestly I don't think the distro matters that much. The Unix core is pretty similar from one to the other. The rest of it really revolves around the utilities etc.

Why not just use a Mac? It is Unix based (although not Unix) with plenty of "eye candy" as you put it and it has pretty a substantial assortment of available commercial software.

Personally, I understand why Linux makes a good platform for a web server, as an example, but I don't understand why you think it would make a particulary good computer for a service department. It is a hobbyist platform for end user computers. It's professional use is really more apparent in the server arena. Yes, I know of companies that use Linux exclusively but they are a small minority and they struggle because of it. Believe me, they struggle because of it. It's always hard to be minority.

I would love to buy a mac and use it as a tech PC but there expensive! lol, and linux is free! lol. Well thanks. I'll just keep trying more and more linux distro's the cool thing about linux is there are so many to choose from and that is also the bad thing about linux. I want to try them all but that won't be possible, and I can't really choose which to use :( lol.

I would go with either Ubuntu because of its support,Or OpenSuse.

OpenSUSE is my alternate to Ubuntu so I'd agree with his post. They do run on two different interfaces though. SUSE is KDE and Ubuntu is GNOME. As for eye-candy, every Linux system is customizable so the options for something more 'aesthetic' are rather endless. You can look around gnome-look.org for a number of mods.

Thanks and I've tried both of the those. I just installed PCLinuxOS 2009.1 and its a very cool linux distro. I like it alot lol. Easiest one to install by far lol.

What issues have you ran into while installing? On both Ubuntu and OpenSUSE, I've never had an issue. OpenSUSE is on the same drive as Windows and Ubuntu has its own HDD. So tri-booting and not encountering a single problem. :good:
