Two Operating Systems on Same Partition

Ok guy, so I installed Xp on my old 1998 IBM thinkpad 600 laptop. While installing XP on it I put it on the same partition as my old Windows 2000 professional was running. Now that I have xp installed I want to delete Windows 2000. I was able to get rid of the screen at startup asking what operating system I wanted to start by searching on the internet and searching around to find out how to fix that. So anyway I think I found the file that windows 2000 is on as its over 1.2gig and is called WINNT. I know that the XP OS is on the file labelled Windows. My question is, has XP copied all the drivers from the old OS so that I don't need to worry about deleting Windows 2000. Another thing is, is that I don't know what file $win_NT$.~bt is. Could it be a part of the Windows 2000 OS? Its been a while since I've had to instal XP on a computer and have totally forgot how to. Sorry for all the stupid questions. Everything is running fine but I dont have a floppy drive or a way of makeing a back-up cd because all this computer has is a cd-rom drive, not a burner, thats why I want to make sure that its safe to do what I want to do before I screw up the computer. I figured its a good computer to fool around with because its only a $150 mistake compared to a $1000+ mistake if I did it on one of my everyday computers. Well sorry for making all of you read all of this. Anyway I'm going to include the pic of folders I was looking at.

Do you want to back up anything on you hd?

yes - I haven't got an answer for your question unless you buy an external hd or usb drive and back up what you need on there then wipe your hd. Install xp.

no - Wipe your hd, then install xp again. You said you hadn't done it for along time but xp does almost everything for you, so it shouldn't be that hard.

Hope ive been of some help although i can't see it! LOL

OK well I'll try to clear it up:

1. I have installed Windows XP on the same partition as Windows 2000.

2. I want to get rid of Windows 2000.

3. I think I've found the file with Windows 2000 in it(see pic in 1st post)

4. My question is: Will deleting Windows 2000 off the hard drive cause any trouble to the operation of the computer?(Basically, could XP be using any files on Windows 2000 that would effect my computer if I deleted it)

5. I don't have a way to back up my hdd.

6. I tried re-installing Xp and deleting the only partition(which has both 2000+Xp on it) and it said it needed file from that partition to continue installing XP.

7. So I have 2 OS's on the same partition and want to get rid of the old one(Windows 2000) what are the potential problems I could run into?

This is my mama's 'c' drive::cool:

She hasn't got windows 2000, just xp. As you can see the folder that you said (correctly) belongs to windows 2000 isn't there. If i was you i would delete that folder because i am 99.9% sure that it'll have nothing to do with the windows xp on your system. I'm NOT saying it'll work i'm saying that I would delete that folder.:)

OK, so can anyone else give some imput before I delete it? Also does anyone know what that wierd $Wind_NT$~bt file could be? I think it might be files that xp copied when I tried to re-install XP this morning but I'm not sure.

The WINNT folder contains the Windows 2000 operating system files. If you want to remove Windows 2000, delete that folder. XP doesn't copy drivers from an existing Windows installation (AFAIK), so any drivers you are currently running are within the WINDOWS directory.

If you are really worried about deleting it, rename the folder and see whether XP says that it can't find any drivers it requires. I'm sure that it won't, but it's just so you don't have any doubt when you delete it.

It would have worked much better in the first place to format when you installed Windows. 2k would have dissapeared.
