Two Problems

There are two really big problems I need help with!!!

Okay, for starters, I DO NOT WATCH PORN! THAT CRAP IS REALLY DUMB, THEREFORE I DO NOT WATCH IT! But, when I went to go fix the computer today, there were MANY traces of porn on my comp. I will admit, that I was tricked many times to go into porn sites, and I think that porn downloaded itself unto my comp. I have no money to pay for those things that fix it, and those trials only detect, not fix. Any suggestions?

Second, when I start my computer, it says

hard disk S.M.A.R.T. status:BAD backup and replace

or something like that, and I searched it up. It said my hard drive was either going bad or was going to fail! I don't want it to fail! My dad says he wasn't going to fix it if it failed, so I need to fix it! I'm not going to call in technicians or some people like that, but I need your help to fix it. Please help me!

And, I am a computer n00b, so please use language that I can understand!

Please, I need urgent help!

Well, you don't really need to pay for anything to get rid of any porno movies on your PC, just delete them. Empty the recycle bin.

Download CCleaner, this will clean up the majority, if not all of the crap on your PC, first time I ran it, it removed 2GB of stuff that wasn't needed, so I highly recomend it.

Also, do the usual, virus scan, disk cleanup and defragment.

There's no 100% tool for blocking except being cautious of what sites you go to. Hundreds of new sites popup on a weekly basis. CCleaner is only good for clearing out the offline content for IE and finding useless temp folders. For removing the typical trojans copied onto your drive you need programs like Ad-Aware, Spybot Search+Destroy, and even AVG as well as a firewall to prevent unwanted items from starting up. Deleting all offline content for IE helps while scanning the entire drive with security tools and spysweepers/adware removers is recommended.

What about the S.M.A.R.T. problem? How do I fix that? I really can't afford for my Hard Drive or Disc to fail...

I've had my computer for at least 3 years without any problems, and this comes up...this is terrible.

How do you clean your Hard Disc?? Please, I'm deperate!

And I've heard of disabling the S.M.A.R.T. function. How do you do that?

Well, there may not be anything you can do to stop if from failing if it is.
You can go into the BIOS and disable the SMART function, normally press Delete to enter the BIOS when the computer is starting up, take a look around and see what there is.

Start > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragment, they're two things you should do.

Hope this is of some help :)

Okay, so let me get one thing straight.

If my Hard Drive fails, what happens? I know I lose everything. But does that mean I need to get a new one?

If your drive should fail that would be the obvious answer there. To prevent data loss there are methods commonly used for frequent backups like burning data disks or even installing a second drive for storage and backup there. On the current system here with three versions of Windows a fourth drive serves to store files to have onhand as well as a backup until data dvds are burned. But I also work with a large number of larger sized files too.

Well, Yeah, if your Hard Drive fails you won't be able to use the computer untill you get a new one. It's awkward I know, but it's something that had to be done if the unfortunate happens.

Alright...well...its goodbye computer.

But I need to know one more thing. There isn't any way to fix it? Nothing?

If not, I don't want to keep seeing the S.M.A.R.T. warning. How do you get to BIOS or something like that?

Well, it may not be failing, it may just be the S.M.A.R.T thing being screwy.

When your computer is starting up, just keep pressing the Delete key, it should enter the BIOS, then you need to look around and see if you can disable the S.M.A.R.T feature, you're more than likely able to.

Alright, well guys, thanks. Hopefully my dad will be understanding and will buy me another computer, maybe. But I may never use this again. Thanks again, anyways. Keep your comp safe.

For entering the bios setup and enablling or disabling features/settings there read through the user manual for the system if prebuilt or board manual if a custom build. That will explain what each setting is for and what it does. For cleaning all traces of sites you run into there's a freeware called Evidence Nuker found at http://www.evidencenuker.com/eula/

Remember to get some adware removers too like Ad-Aware found at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php A good popup blocker to keep unwanted windows from opening and immediately closing ones that do open instead of going to sites will be a plus there.

Your making a really big deal out of this, if your hard drive fails, which it might not even do because it could just be some random thing going crazy and it might go away in a week or two, all you got to do is buy another hard drive. You can get an excellent hard drive got less than $100 these days.

Gee I only paid $109 for each 500gb sata used here. :D That shows just how far prices have dropped on dirves over the years. I once paid $200 for a 13gb ide drive to now have two 500gb satas in one case for just a little more then that. For less then the old $200 price mentioned I will now look at some 750gb models to create an array. For a smaller 80-160gb model you can find those for about $60-70 easy enough.
