Two psus

Hello.

My power supply seems to have lost a great deal of it's output after I tried installing a new 3 pin Molex powered fan. It says it should only use 1.6W, but soon after my computer started randomly shutting down. Now it works fine with graphics card taken out, but won't boot with it in.
I have a second psu lying around and got the idea to hook everything but the graphics card and motherboard up to it with it sitting outside the case. I'm wondering if this is dangerous and if it'll work. I already have an open pci slot that I can't close since I won't be using the fan. I'll make sure not to move the psu and keep the cords from blocking the fans. Sorry if this is a newb idea. This is my first desktop and I didn't build it myself. Responses are much appreciated.
TL;DR I want to hook my graphics card and ATX up to one psu and everything else up to another sitting outside the case.

I would much rather you simply drop $30 and get a new PSU (will handle most mid range systems), but you can use the second PSU using something like this. You then connect the second PSU 24Pin connector to the adaptor so it gets a 'good' signal from the motherboard and both PSUs will turn on. The second PSU then is used just to power the graphics card, the other PSU is for everything else.

I would strongly recommend you get something like this:

for $30 instead though! saves a lot of heart ache.

What graphics card are you running and what PSUs?

Please buy that Corsair PSU. Very good quality, and it's more than $100 here in Denmark.
I would have a thousand PCs if I we had rebates on top of sales.

I have a GTX 550 TI by ASUS and a Corsair CX430W. Just out of curiosity, does playing a game or using a dvd drive use more power? Oh, and thank you very much. I don't really see the point in spending $40 on a psu I won't be able to use if I decide to do a major upgrade. My school doesn't deserve to have low electricity cost so I'm not concerned about excessive power usage of two PSUs.

One thing, the power cords that plug into the motherboard besides the ATX power, like the cpu, should they come from the psu supplying the ATX or devices? The other power supply came with the computer. It's a 300 watt FSP 300 60THA
