ok i am going to be buying a new operating system this week. either i can pay for a cheap version of xp home, or i can buy this:vista home premium ok looking at the reviews, vista premium looks pretty good. the basic vista is crap, but this home premium looks like a keeper. which do i choose? i have plenty of ram, a good proc, good graphics card, and plenty of hard drive to run it. i also want to run a dual boot with linux for basic operations so i dont run up too much ram and stuff, thus negating any of the things that people hav problems with on vista. i need to know how to set up partitions and stuff so i can play games and stuff on vista and do operations on linux. i have an 80gb drive i want to go solely to lvista, and a 40gb i want to just go to linux.

wait wait wait... that is the 32-bit version, i can get the 64-bit version for even cheaper. should i go for that instead? i know some ppl dont trust ebay, but i do, and this guy sellng vista is the real deal, he even has a store, so its a very low chance for ripoff

One way to do it and keep the two installs completely separate is to unplug the 40GB drive, then Install Vista or XP on the 80 GB.

Then shut down your computer and unplug the 80GB and plug in the 40GB and install Linux on the 40GB.

Now plug both drives in, and when you reboot press whatever key it is to bring up your BIOS boot menu (mine is F11) and choose which drive to boot from, thus booting the OS of choice.

That keeps them in completely separate environments.

ok that answers that question easily enough, but now how do i convince my mom that vista is a viable alternative then xp? (i dont even have a printer, all it needs to be compatible with is my router, belkin54g)

mby i should post my rig for problems with vxista?

cpu: AMD3400 + @2.4GHZ socket 754
GFX: ATI radeon x800GTO
1.25 gb ocz ram
120gb hard drive space,
dvd burner and readers,
comcast cable 6MBPS connection, by way of belkin 54G wireless router,
onboard soundcard

EDIT: ok i would like my other questions answered first, but is it possible to run two operating systems at the same time with dual screen? if no thats ok it just sounded really cool

ok bump, just cuz its, i thnk, a simple question and it needs solving fast: will it work and is it a good decision to do it, considering my dual boot plan

You cannot run 2 OS's at the same time from the same machine on dual screens.

To run 2 OS's at the same time you could:

1) Run 1 of them as a virtual machine inside the other. (Eats a lot of resources)
2) Run 2 machines with 2 monitors. (More power, noise, space)
3) Run 2 machines with a KVM switch and share a monitor, keyboard and mouse between them. (Not really giving access to both simultaniously)

I'm pretty sure that's about it for your options in that respect.

oh ok thats allright, if i ever need to, (unlikely) ill just set up a virtual machine... so anyone with vista x64 wanna give me some lee-way on my mother? hahaha

vista is really good, i think u should get vista, ur going to revert to vista anyways in the future, but odnt get the 64 bit verison i heard theres not alot of drivers out there for programs

i think it was omega that said that there were plenty of drivers nowadays, and since the only things i would need drivers for is an ATI x800GTO... i really dont use much of anyhting else
