Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron"

Hi guys,
Thanks for your time.

I am planning to install Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop, which is a HP Pavilion 6383ea.

Now, I'm a newbie in Ubuntu and I'm only using it for the first time.
I have read stuff that sometimes the boot manager gets corrupted because of Ubuntu. Is this true?

Anyways, I'm also concerned about my laptop because my laptop has an inbuilt camera, microphone, etc. and once, my friend had created backups of all of his driver files but after reformatting the system, it still didn't work.

So my question is : How safe is the Ubuntu uninstallation? Will it corrupt my boot manager?

Awaiting your answer :D

Your laptop should have come with a few CD's. One of them will have all the drivers needed for your laptop to work with XP/Vista (whichever OS it came with).

Nope, don't have any CD/DVD. I checked... I guess I misplaced them.
But I have made a Backup using the default vista backup utility. Would that contain the QuickPlay buttons, camera,... driver files?

Ubuntu 8.04 works with pretty much anything all my MacBook Pro drivers just went in without any problems and since thats a windows notebook you will installl it just fine:D

if you afraid, you can download the live desktop cd and test run ubuntu until you satisfy with it before you install it

Thanks for the reviews. I would also like to know how to uninstall Ubuntu should anything go wrong.

Simple! :) Just install windows (or whatever... another Linux distro if you like) and format the hard drive. You don't have to actually go through an uninstallation process.

I'd advise you to do a bit of research first. In the past, Ubuntu hasn't always played nice with laptops. Lods of stuff was upgraded for 8.04, so you'll probably be fine, just take a few minutes to make sure others have done it with your system.

Not so much corrupted as glorified:) GRUB > Windows MBR anyday.

Without knowing exactly what he did, it could just be a 'he copied the installed files, not the actual installation programs' sort of thing. But yeah, as mentioned, if you have a Driver CD, you're golden.

Ubuntu is safe, period. But as mentioned, see if it plays nice first. And again, with the BL, GRUB is wonderful. If you decide to uninstall Ubuntu later, you will need to fix Windows MBR, but it's fairly simple to do.
