Don't know how good apache/ubuntu support is here, didn't feel like signing up for another forum.
But I am trying to run an apache file server through ubuntu, I can access it fine from behind my router by using my internal ip address.
whatismyip.com tells me my external ip address, however when I got connect my laptop directly to the modem, whatismyip.com tells me a completely different external ip address, why?

I've used Ubuntu before and personally found it annoying but there we are. The reason that you get a new IP address, as far as i can see, is that DHCP has assigned you another IP address when connecting to the new hardware. Which is it's job.

Plus i've just had a look at whatsmyipaddress.com and it seems abit odd - it says i'm in Kent when i'm in Newcastle... :S

Have you tried using both external IP addresses? if so which one, if any, work?

you have a dynamic ip address which means if you unplug it or anything the ip changes

Probably.
But when I connect directly to my modem I have a different ip address, let's call it ip address #1. When connected behind my router I have ip address #2.
#1 is always the same when corrected directly to the modem.
#2 is always the same when behind the router.
Pretty sure #1 is assigned to the router somehow.

Does anybody know anything about comcast blocking the http protocol? Or port 80?

I really don't think comcast does block it... Verizon does and I have to use 8080... They are extremely retarded for this, the exploit of port 80 was the Code Red Virus and that was years ago.
