Ubuntu Codecs

I have been having fun figuring out Ubuntu. I have enjoyed dabbling in this somewhat unknown environment. I have managed to install new software and codecs so I can run videos I have saved on a HDD. However, the colours on the films are like black and white with some unusual shading on select colours. In fact, I've been watching old black and white films as a result.

Can anyone recommend a codec pack that will resolve this issue. I am actively searching for something, but if there's something to recommend then chuck it my way.

Cheers!! D

I tried installing vic and there was a problem. I don't think Ubuntu has a flawed installation but I think it's not installing codecs and updates correctly.

To be specific; the colours are off on my video playback. I've tested this with DVDs. I couldn't run them before, I have since installed a DVD patch that makes it work. The DVDs have the same problems as avi or general video files. I tested it with pictures to check it wasn't the monitor, it's just with video playback. The videos online at YouTube were fine.

HELP!!!
