Ubuntu OS Question

Hi there, last night I decided to take a look at Ubuntu. After doing some reading here and there I decided to download the OS and give it a try. Im really please with the startup of the OS, and the interface. Only thing like everything else that is new, it will take sometime to get used to.

Here is my question. This is an OS right? So does that mean I can download software/programs like I had in Windows? Because I was trying to download some programs and it would come back with a message. The message stated that I didn't have enough disk space to install the program. Why is this? I have 320gb of free space. Is there somewhere I can go to maybe add more space?

Thanks In Advance!

I think I have had the same error before. It sounds like Ubuntu is trying to download programs to the boot (/) file system. Did you manually set the partition table? Is so, there is a chance that your boot files are your /Home partition have the same mount point. That would give you little to no room to install programs.

So you have Windows and Ubuntu running dual boot. Is that right?

How are you trying to add these programs? Are you using the main Add/Remove Programs manager (Aptitude, I think) or Synaptic?

Could be that you filled up the available space that you set in ubuntu.
When you Installed it (assuming you downloaded and ran install right off the website), it gave you an option of how much disk space to use. The max option is 30GB. The default is 10GB IIRC. If you did not alter it, you may just have ran out of space.

That's for Wubi. He installed it by booting from it and making a partition for it, seems to me.

Were you able to fix your problem? If so how did you do it? Im un-installed Ubuntu and then re-installed it again. I dont see anywhere, where it gave me the option to make a bigger disk space. Im still having the same problem...

when you run the installer it will come up with a window.

You need to open the dropdown menu under Installation size and increase the size.

Note that you can only increase to 30 GB, and only on empty space. This is only possible under Dual Boot with Windows.

You will need a USB or CD if you are planning of using the whole HDD (wipe and install).
