Ubuntu Wifi

Why is it that I can easily figure out how to load Ubuntu from a USB on a laptop but its like trying to learn another language when it comes to setting up wifi?

Version 12.04

I "enabled" the driver

SSID is my network name I believe

Mode: infrastructure?

BSSID: NO CLUE

Device MAC: NO CLUE

Cloned MAC: NO CLUE

any guidance would help!
 
You shouldn't need to go that route. Can you click on the wireless icon on the top and see if any wireless networks drop down?
 
is there a hardware switch for your wireless? If it is a button for the wireless you might need to hit it to enable the wireless in the hardware
 
It doesnt seem to be doing anything even if i switch off then on, wifi is on if I'm in windows, back into ubuntu its off. Dell Vostro 1400

Try these steps and let me know how they work out for you. Broadcom wifi drivers have been a plague on linux for a very long time. :mad:

Uninstall the bcmwl-kernel-source package by issuing the following command on a terminal:

sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source
make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer b43-fwcutter
type into terminal:

cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'bcm'
(you may want to copy this) and see if the term 'blacklist bcm43xx' is there

if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf

put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx

then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly).

reboot

this is not installed...how do I go about fixing that.
 
Ah I see...ok I tried that but it says unable to fine...forgive this if its a stupid question...do I need to be online to download that?
 
Ok I can make that work tmrw...will that command automatically search the internet for the required driver or do I need to manually download it and then let it install?
 
It will try to find the driver and install it manually. If it can't then there is a chance that the PPA is not installed. You can install it by using these commands

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mpodroid/mactel
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer b43-fwcutterr
