Ugrading a relic with a relic!!!

Im trying to put a Diamond Multimedia Stealth 64 Video 2001 card in my computer. With the card in and the monitor cable hooked to it my computer will get past the WindowsXP load screen and freeze on the black screen. I've tried letting it run for a while thinking its just upgrading a driver or something before the screen comes up, but it never does. Does this mean the card is not compatible, or do I need to pre-install a driver for it?
 
Can you get to Safe Mode? I had a problem just like this and it was due to my card not being seated properly.
It would also be good to know some mobo specs.

I got into safe mode with the card. When I looked in the device manager it show it as S3 Trio 32/64. What do I need to do in safe mode to get it working in normal? Do I need to be in safe mode networking? I will try to find out more about my motherboard, but for now all I know is it comes in the Gateway GP.
