unable to access folder on hard drive

dont know if this is correct thread to post on. if not then apologies.
my problem is one folder on the desktop which i cannot access. clicking on it does nothing at present. however a few hrs ago when i clicked on it an error message came up saying that internet windows? had created errors and had to do something. then i went to white screen with option to recover active desktop.
any ideas>?
 
just to add. i just tried opening system and as it opened all of a sudden an error message came up 'windows exe has generated errors and must be closed by window. an error log will be written. '
very strange.
 
can you access the internet??? if you can then download SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your PC and clean any infected files etc... also download AdAware SE Personal Edition and scan/clean your PC. Do you have any Anit Virus software isntalled, and from what you said i can tell that you do not have windows XP, is it ME or 98?? (im hoping 98, lol)

As the other poster stated, run a scan on that machine. It sounds as if the file system on the drive is damaged too. You may need to reformat or possibly replace the hard drive.
 
ive got quite a few security programs.
antivirus,antitrojan,zonealarm,spybot,adaware,ewido,prox,ssm,spysw,cw,firefox to name a few

have windows 2000

problems started after installing all updates from microsoft .also using kazaa
but never had a problem with kazaa before.
 
XP always has a folder called "System Volume Information" that noone can access. If this isn't the name of the folder then run a filesystem check:
Start > Run > chkdsk c: /f /r
It will pop up a window saying that this is the system disk and that the check needs to be run at the next boot, Answer with a "y" and then restart. This should correct the problem.
