Unable to move XP files from hard drive to new computer.

The old hard drive ended up with a corrupt XP windows system. I have attempted to transfer important files to a new computer and a backup disk. I can see the files on the old hard drive but when I attempt to transfer them I get the 'Special permission required'.
I have tried all the registry changes and security box ticking security changes but can not get to tick the Special Permissions box as it is greyed out.
The hard drive will not boot. It will not accept new 7 upgrade from XP. No recovery disc. No recovery partition.
I have tried windows easy transfer but still get that warning. Have tried loading it to Omega back up drive but still the SPR warning.
How can I get these files to open please?
Any help appreciated, thanks.

Use a Linux recovery environment such as PartedMagic or Mini Windows XP (both found on Hiren's Boot CD).

Download and run this reg file and merge it into your registry. What it will do is create a take ownership option in the right click menu. Then all you do is right click on the folder that you want ownership so that you can copy/move files from and click on take ownership.

Download the file, unzip it. You will see 2 files.

Install take ownership
Uninstall take ownership

Double click the install take ownership to merge into the registry.

Works with any operating system.

Thanks to you both. The Hiren's DVD would not boot so left with blank screen, handy tool to keep.
The registry changes were made to the desktop I am using to lift the files from the old hard drive but it is still blocking
me with message permission need from 'computer administrator'.
The problem appears to be in the old hard drive giving access to the transfer, it does transfer the folder but then all contents
are saved there as one NATUSER.DAT file which I am unable to open.

You're doing something wrong then, because it should be a simple copy of the user data located under C:\Documents and Settings\User and then whatever they have under the My Documents/Pictures/Music etc folders.

Have just reloaded the Take ownership download and I got it right this time. It works.......whoopee!
Thanks for your help. John.
