Unable To Return To A Restore Point

I have tried like 3 different times to restore my computer to a different date and everytime it reboots up, it tells me it was unable to restore it. The problem is that a couple days ago my computer kept saying a file was missing or corrupt and finally i was able to get past all that and my screen loaded up and now like only 3 icons are on my desktop and i think when i had it on safe mode the whole desktop looked normal. I was trying to get all my stuff off my pc before i try to wipe it and i seemed to have misplaced some files and they are not in there directory and have tried to search for them, but no success and thats what i am trying to restore to a few days or a month back.

Hey kof2000, can you elaborate a bit on that. I wasn't aware of that. Do you mean that only if the OS is being run from an external hdd? - Because System Restore never works for me, but WinXP is on an interal hdd. My usb hdd is only for personal files.
 
if you have it plugged in and on while they save the restore point. when you restore to that point later on it will fail.
