unable to save to desktop help?

I must have changed or hit something on accident but i no longer can see any icons/folders on my desktop and all my existing icons/folders on my desktop are no longer there. They are all in a folder named "desktop" but they are not on my desktop screen for some reason.

If i try and drag a file from the "desktop" folder to the desktop it says "the destination folder is the same as the source folder"

running windows 8.1
