underclocking (yes right under!)

hi!
im very sad about my system cuz i have to reduce the FSB of my Athlon XP 1900 (Palomino) from 133 to 100 MHz. If i dont, ill have temps about 70°C while playing games (e.g. warcraft 3) and this leads to frozen (my frozen throne ;) ) or black screens. ok know u think: man, did he forget the CPU-Cooler or wtf? - but my cooler runs at 2700 RPM and i think it should do its job fine. ill get myself an additional cooler for the chassis cuz my old one did awful noises and i removed it... but i know that it wont help much with my problem (already testet it). but ok its an pretty old system and i think about buying new one early next year with all the new stuff (S-ATA, 64-bit CPU, PCI-Express). but until then i must use my 'crook'. my question is: does the core voltage depend on the FSB clock
proportional? so lets say i use FSB 100 MHz and have a normal core voltage of 1.75V. can i reduce it to e.g. 1.35V ??? then, i think, i could play games with this PC with no heating problems... any other suggestions?

but my cooler runs at 2700 RPM and I think it should do its job fine
RPM doesnt mean jack. My cooler can run down to those numbers but its a beast of a setup. As for 'doing its job fine' -- whats the temp?

does the core voltage depend on the FSB clock
No and yes (note the wording). No because you can set it independantly as you wish. Yes because, if you OC the FSB youll need to start changing the Vcore

so lets say I use FSB 100 MHz and have a normal core voltage of 1.75V. can I reduce it to e.g. 1.35V ??? then, I think, I could play games with this PC with no heating problems... any other suggestions?
If you can drop from 1.75 to 1.35 and still boot then congratulations. :D Its better to deal with the problems rather than deal with the symptoms. :)

ok of course ur right that its better to deal with the problems then the symptoms. so u would suggest me to try another cooler right? in normal desktop mode my temps are about 65-67 °C when using the full core voltage and FSB 133 MHz. and with FSB 100 maybe at 63°C in deskop-mode. right now i use 100 MHz FSB and about 1.5V core voltage and my CPU is at nice 54°C. so u would suggest me to try another cooler for my CPU ? atm i use some cooler from arctic. i read it shall be good. but what kind of cooler would u suggest? (im only afraid that it wont help cuz i read about ppl that also used palomino, had similar temps and changed up to 3 times the cpu-fan with no results... so im really not sure if ill try that too and i think it would be easier to regulate the FSB and core speed (e.g. 120 MHz FSB and a core speed of about 1.60). what do u think ?

I had a problem kinda close in my sister's computer. She was running hot at about 55 celcius under load. Well i installed a few fans and replaced a old stock one and got it to 50. So next step took fan and heat sink off cpu. DAMN huge clump of dust. on the heat sink and fan was filthy too. So i cleaned it and applied some new thermal gel on the cpu and its running ALOT cooler like almost 8 degrees cooler

i also renewed to thermal gel but i didnt get the effect i hoped for :( but another question: in some cpu-tables i saw that the palomino's temp may rise up to 90°C. so why do i have probs at 72°C ? is the measured temp not the exact temp of the die?

so u would suggest me to try another cooler right
Yes indeed. I assume you're using stock?

in normal desktop mode my temps are about 65-67 °
Whats the room temp?

so u would suggest me to try another cooler for my CPU ? atm I use some cooler from arctic.
Yes I would suggest another cooler.

but what kind of cooler would u suggest? (im only afraid that it wont help cuz I read about ppl that also used palomino, had similar temps and changed up to 3 times the cpu-fan with no results...
I too had a palomino just a year ago. The Thermaltake Volcano7+ kept it mostly undercontrol (except in the summer and when I was OCing and stressing). Seriously though something like the Volcano12 (loud) or the SilentboostK7 (silent) is more than sufficient.

She was running hot at about 55 celcius under load
Thats not bad

i also renewed to thermal gel but I didnt get the effect I hoped for
1. What thermal paste?
2. HOW MUCH?
3. You need to let it set

in some cpu-tables I saw that the palomino's temp may rise up to 90°C. so why do I have probs at 72°C ?
Palomino temps MAY rise above 90 but that doesnt mean it SHOULD. The "panic" line I 70C and the very-concerned line is 60C

thanks for ur engagement praetor! i think ill try the "silent boost K7" as u suggested. atm i have the "arctic cooling silicone" heatsink compound. i read that the K7 comes with thermal paste too. is it good? my room-temp is about 20°C (i live in fu**ing cold germany ;) ). but i think the installation of the FAN was correct since i read much about how to do it the right way. so i now also think that it all depends on the right cooler...

I wouldnt use the stuff that comes with the silentboost (although i have in the past) ... then again ive never heard of this arctic cooling silicone stuff either ... its a toss up.

why must you lower FSB? Can't you just keep FSB and lower multi, or is your chip locked? That's what i do for my gf's rig (stock cooling, 225*9, 1.625v) It's still 2000mhz...just better than running 166*12 or sumthin.
