I wanted to find out if Powersuite is something I should have running on the computer.

My mother-in-law gave my son her old laptop to play online games on. I noticed that it was pretty slow with jittery graphics while he played. The screen-saver graphics is even jittery. I am trying to lean up the machine by taking out some low quality programs. She does have the Powersuite 2011 on it, which is a bundle of three programs by Uniblue: RegistryBooster, SpeedUpMyPC, and DriverScanner. This program runs at startup, and when I look on the task manager, it is always using the CPU between 20-30%.

There are problems with the computer that all 3 of the seperate components said it had found. I have not yet allowed Powersuite to "fix" them. I have read a wide range of advice on these programs on the internet, however most seem to just want to sell it to you, so theyare hard to trust. I also saw a lot of warnings about using it to mess with the registry.

So, are any of these safe to run? Will powersuite stop running in the background if I correct the problems it has found. Or should I just remove the whole thing?

Uninstall that software, its causes more issues then anything. I then suggest you to download and run the folllowing and post the logs.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.



Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

I figured something was off if a program was constantly using cpu rosource in the background on the order of 20 to 30%. I will uninstall it, though I shudder to think my mother-in-law probably paid at least $60 for it.

Interestingly enough, she already has Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on the laptop. I'll be sure to make sure its fully updated before running the scans.

Is it a concern of yours that the Powersuite may leave some bad stuff behind when I uninstall it, or is the hijackthis just a good check to do in general?
 
Hijackthis is a good thing to run after malwarebytes, lets me know if there any issues besides malware still in your system. All those programs especially when you said "speedupmypc" are just gimmicks. They cause more issues than anything. All you need is a good malware scanner, virus program, and ccleaner.
 
Busy with family, so able to do this a step or two at a time, so this may drag out a bit.

Here is an update however. Computer is to a normal operational speed for a computer not running anything. No constant drain of 20-30 % of the computer's CPU. Now down to 2-5%, and two less processes running. The flowerball screensaver flows smoothly as one would expect. I already know my son should have a better gaming experience.

After uninstalling powersuite, I did still see a another uniblue program: pixel perfect? I dont know what it is for, but at least it does not constantly run in the background.

I will continue now with the Malewarebytes.

Malewarebytes founding nothing on either quick or full scan.

Is the link correct for hijackthis? I cant get it to download or even open the webpage.

Is this in anyway related to a boycott of or lawsuit involving trendmicro I found on the internet dated circa 2008?

Looks like you had mcafee installed at one time. You should download and run the mcafee removal tool here.

I just wanted to get some insight into this process if you don't mind. Will fixing the checked items actually fix them, or delete them? One of the items seemed to have to do with clone wars, which my son plays on the laptop.

In general, what was the rationale for picking the items to fix?
What does the security check program do?
I really would like to get to know more about this stuff.

It's only listed as a trusted zone and technically, you really shouldn't have anything listed in your trusted zones as its a good way to get infected nowadays.

Removing the 04 entries will make the system start up quicker because those programs will be set not to open on bootup. When you install a program, it usually makes an entry so that it starts at bootup and a lot of programs don't need to run at bootup.

The security check program runs and checks for outdated security software along with outdated java and adobe reader. All older programs have security vulnerabilities which means is you are running an older version it could easily get you infected.

PS
I have some windows updates notifications that recently popped up. Should I go ahead and install them, or wait until we are done?
 
I hit a problem.

Was able to uninstall the programs.
However, when trying to install the flash player, it goes through the whole process, and then when I click on "finish", I get an error message saying it cant find a file, and says that I should search for the file. Also, it opens the firefox browser when it is done on the page stating that it did install. However, when I look at the installed programs list it is still not installed.

By the way, I originally used IE browser.
 
Ok, so this is weird.
I disabled access to Firefox so that at the end of the install it would not open the Firefox browser. However, it still is able to. I dont know if the install failure has to do with the fact that I'm originally downloading the flash player with IE, and then it is opening the Firefox browser when it is done, or because Firefox is not updated (as you saw), or because on the Firefox browser I do get a message that I need more addons.

I dont use Firefox; I just use IE while I'm trying to maintain the laptop. However my mother-in-law had both those two as well as Chrome installed here. I would not hesitate to uninstall Firefox, except that thats what she and my son seem to use, as they have a lot of favorites bookmarked in it.
 
Feel like a bit of a noob, but in my defense, I only use one internet browser at a time.

I was able to resolve my issues when I went into IE browser and made it the default. After that I did not have any error message when I was installing Flash from the IE and firefox did not load at the end.
I presume then that there is a seperate flash for firefox that was not installing because I was downloading the IE version. Also it was also likely that the IE version was already installed as "flash player active x" in the installed programs list was probably for IE, and the flash I uninstalled was for the firefox.

So it looks like I was able to do everything you said successfully.
Am I all set then?

Just a last couple questions: Why didnt Java uninstall or overwrite its older version when the new one was installed.

On a new finding: Looking at the favorites in the IE browser, there are a bunch of .dat..... files in the favorites list. How would these end up there, and is it OK to delete them?

Yes, you can delete the .dat files. Not sure how they got there.

As far as the old java been overwritten, This will now happen when you install a newer version. This didn't start happening until around update 24 or so I think. I've seen machines with like 6 or so older versions of java installed and its definately a security risk having the older versions installed.

I was just going to surmise your use of hijackthis and deduce a proper way to use it without doing any harm.

All O15's should be removed since nothing should be in Trusted Zone.
O4's would be based on extensive experience of what you know you don't need to run at start up, however, if you know you uninstalled a program, it should not be there (e.g. Powersuite).
Something in any category type can be removed, if there is no associated file with it (i.e. no file, or file missing).

Is this correct?

For the most part yes. The file missings aren't included when running a 64 bit OS because most of 023 entries will have file missing at the end.

And I'm not sure why powersuite still showed up after uninstalling unless something didn't uninstall correctly.
