Unidentified fan trying to win competition in loudness - help!

Hello everyone,

My computer recently started to make an odd buzzing noise which keep becoming louder and louder. I am fairly certain that the source is one of the fans and most likely, from what I can tell, the CPU fan. That assumption is founded on the fact that the sound is not constant, sometimes it is louder and sometimes it is much more subtle, which would be consistent with a temperature controlled CPU fan, would it not, as it suggests that the sound is increasing in volume whenever the fan speeds up and vice versa. But it is rather difficult to pinpoint and confirm where the sound is coming from by listening and I cannot be sure that my assumption is correct. As I understand I could verify by simply stopping the fans one at a time. The thing is, though, that I have no idea how to do that, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I have opened the casing to make sure that no cord or anything else is lying against any of the fans, so it is not that which makes the peculiar noise. Perhaps I should also mention that I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to the hardware side of computers.

Many thanks in advance,
//Nils

While it is true I have never actually replaced a fan before I have done enough physical surgical work on my computer to handle the task when the time comes. Besides, what you never attempt you shall never learn. No, what I was worried about was that I might damage my computer by stopping the fans by means of force (my finger).

Chris Chan:
Thank you! I have now managed to confirm my theory; it is indeed the CPU fan which is the culprit. I shall now proceed to familiarise myself with the procedure of replacing a CPU fan and if I encounter any further problems I shall return here immediately.

Many thanks,
Nils

Stopping the fan w/ a finger doesn't harm it, if the fan is a Sanyo model tho, then you may need to spin it manually to restart.
