Well I have a Dell Dimension 3000(with windows XP) that i got about a year ago and it came with mcafee even though I asked for no anti virus protection because I have norton. Well anyways I’ve been lazy and haven’t uninstalled mcafee and installed norton but now that the free trail for mcafee is over i went to uninstall it and couldn't. I tried to uninstall it thought the add/remove software part of the computer but it did not work(it said it was succsuflly uninstaled but now everytime i start my computer i get a bunch of error messages basicly saying that part of mcafee is missing please reinstall it does anyone know how to completely uninstall mcafee so I can install norton

Try going to My Computer, Program files and delete the Mcafee folder if it's there. Also go into Regedit (start>run>regedit), HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then Software and delete the mcafee key. Then in regedit, try HKEY_CURRENT_USER, software and delete it if it's there.

If you've got the Mcafee disc, reinstall then uninstall, if not, boot into safemode and do a search for Mcafee and delete all you find.

How is it different in safe mode? I know thats how your supposed to do things like this but what exactly is different?

When you boot in safemode, only the bare components of windows runs, so anything that normally runs at startup isn't running, and can be deleted.

Edit: got beaten to it!

it siad i didnt have the right privliges but to delete some of the mcafee files
i ended up doing this
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run and deleting all teh mcafee stuff

i dont know if it acuttly deleted mcafee but it did get rid of the anoying popups
