Isnt an UPS a sort of battery pack you can strap to your pc, so in case of a power failure, you still have like 6 minutes to save the files, and shut the pc down safely?
Yes that's exactly what it is. The other thing they do is clean up the power so the spikes and lows aren't seen. Some come with software that lets the system know it's on batteries and can shut them down during a long outage.
