Unique Power Supple Issue

OK I have scanned the forum threads but have not come across one quite like this. My computer started to not turn on right after I would turn it off. I noticed a sound (not loud but louder than normal) coming from the case that I blatantly ingored at first because it would stop after a few minutes and the computer would start up again in about 10-15 mins later. Thing is, this problem would not go away and got worse. So the sound would last longer and longer and it would take longer to turn the computer on. However when I did get it on it would boot up no problem and run like a dream for as long as I needed...until I turned it off again. Opened the comp up, stuck my head in and isolated the sound to the power supply. Here are the things that I find interesting... power was still getting to the mother board the whole time, whether the power supply was doing its whistling thing or not. The light on the mobo was always on as it should be. But power was also getting to the graphics card as the card fan kept a-turnin. The computer simply wouldn't start. So it's been a few days now and it still won't start, but now the sound won't stop. Played around a bit to try to isolate the problem. First I turned it off, disconnected everything from the psu and turned it back on... no funny noise. Proceeded to plug in components one at a time and got no funny sound until I plugged in the mobo, then the motherboard light turned on, the graphics card fan started up and I started getting the not-so-loud-but-louder-than-normal-noise which by now is making me damn nervous. Oh yeah, it still won't boot up. So I have started looking for a new overpriced psu (in my world anything over a tenner is overpriced) but have started wondering if it's actually the psu behaving badly on its own or if its actually the innocent victim of a vicious co-dependent relationship with my conniving mobo. Do any of you relationship councilors out there have any advice? It would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Disgruntled in Europe

Have you looked at your manual for any troubleshooting?

If there's nothing in there, I'd make sure that there isn't anything stuck inside the wires, like a crumb or something.

If your sure the sound was coming from the power supply. My first guess is that you have a Power Supply slowly dying.

Took the PSU out of the comp and took a good look at it. Nothing visible inside that looks like it shouldn't be there. Like Stranglehold, I also suspect that like a senior citizen that has broken their hip, its not going to be with for very much longer.

Yeah sorry I haven't posted my specs. It's an ASUS a8ne board and a Ultra Xconnect vx 500 watt psu.

I already see your problem that PSU is off brand and off brand PSU do not last long and are not rated correctly so 500w off brand is really like 400w and 20A on the +12V rail is only like 15A. I think a new PSU is defiantly the way to go if you wait for that thing to blow it cold take other parts of your computer with it like the harddrive, motherboard, and CD/DVD drive.

Ultra, most models are made by the same two companies that make some of Rosewill power supplies. Wintech and Youngyear.

What kind of "sound" is it, kinda hard to read your first post.. Is it a high pitched "whining" noise? If so thats actually pretty common and known as "coil whine".

Yeah, i wouldnt personally purchase an ultra power supply except for the highest end ones.

Yeah I was wincing when I listed my psu expecting to get some flak for it. Am thinking about a ENERMAX LIBERTY ELT500AWT 500 WATT to replace it, any comments?

As for the sound, its hard to describe it. It's a whining noise but is not exceptionally loud just louder than when it is running normally. And it only happens after the comp has been turned off.

That PSU is no good what is you budget and where do you live so we can find you a good PSU for you needs and price.

Currently in Germany which is tricky for me as I can usually find decent prices in North America and the UK but these crazy people don't speak English. Who knew :)

Budget: ideally as little as possible but will pay to avoid problems in the future... say around 70-90 Euros.

Look for something along the lines of OCZ, Antec Earthwatts, Corsair, BFG,Tagan, Silverstone, Zalman, FSP, Seasonic are some quality brands.

Btw, Lernen Sie Deutsch sprechen (Learn to speak german:P)
