So, I'm a poor college student and I am waiting until i get grant money this year to upgrade but when im doing anything my computer will just "shut off" i put quotes because it actually just shuts the monitor off (then it just goes to sleep mode and wont come on) and the sound stops as well.
I'm thinking that because the video isn't the only thing shutting off that the motherboard is failing. is this correct? sometimes my keyboard will stop working like its unplugged i dont know if its just the keyboard is busted or if that is part of it.
also im looking at a case mobo and processor to upgrade for now if i need to
im looking at
Processor

mobo

but I dont know what a good case is because my case is a crappy 400$ best buy bought case that came with the cpu and mobo like 4 years ago with horrible ventillation. any suggestions? im trying to get the best i can without breaking my bank so id say a $600-800ish range?

First things first, answer these questions please:

  1. What are your system specs (download PC Wizard from my sig, run it and go to FILE, SAVE AS and click OK. Copy the text out of that file in this thread).
  2. What Power Supply Unit do you have? Open the case and read off the label of the PSU.
  3. Confirm your budget is $400?
  4. What will you be using the computer for? Gaming?
  5. Does the computer turn off while you're using it or is it that it will not wake from sleep/hybernation properly?

What I am thinking is either of the following:

1. Power Supply Unit beginning to fail causing system instability
2. CMOS battery voltage droop (going flat) causing issues on boot/wake
3. Dust buildup or thermal paste fail causing heat issues

The above is what I would check out first prior to buying anything. Then once you have excluded these, you will have a better idea of what you should purchase to suit your needs.

Firstly go to ASUS and ensure that you have the latest BIOS and drivers including the ASUS EPU 4-Engine update.

Ensure you have the latest drivers from nvidia for your graphics card.

Ensure you have the latest intel chipset drivers for your motherboard

If it continues to be a problem, replace the motherboard battery and clean out the computer.

I guess it really comes down to what you want to do. We can solve this issue if you would rather keep as much of your gear, or you could replace the motherboard, gpu, psu, ram and cpu with your 800.

well either way im going to be replacing much when i get the money but right now i just have money thats reserved for if i need it so i was gonna wait till i had money from grants

I am not 100% sure, but I think silicon melts below that. Your GPU should no tbe over 70 or so I would think. My lappy averages 60*c at 100% gpu load, so a desktop should be able to do better.

i feel like something is wrong with the sensors because i am playing games no graphic issues

A gpu running at 110 degrees C will cause the gpu to shut down. Crank the fan up, remove overclocks (if any) and repalce thermal paste.
