One of my desktop pc's is about eight years old. I've never had any trouble with it, except that the monitor had to be renewed about two years back. However, I found an old Philips monitor and used that without any problems.
I had not turned that pc on for quite a while and when I did eventually get round to it, the pc booted into windows xp but the video display would come and go. Occasionally, after restarting on several attempts, the pc appeared to work successfully.
The graphics card is a nvidia and appears to give excellent display when I can get the pc to eventually stabilise.
On Friday, thinking that this may be a hard drive or missing file problem, I reformatted the hard drive and booted into windows with no fuss. I have performed a chkdsk /r which is O.K. the bios memory check appears O.K. and I have reduced the display settings to 800 x 600 @ 16 bit resolution.
At the moment, I am seeing black squares on the screen and wonder if this is indicitave of a memory problem or else the monitor itself.
Thanks.
