Hi,

I have a 56K modem in my Pci slot.

However i dont use it as i have broadband and use the ethernet connection on my motherboard.

Should i disable the Modem in the device manager?Or just leave it?

Thanks

even better... I would just pop it out of the case.. you have a antistatic bag somewhere?
I mean,.. Im not sure if it still consumes power when disabled in the software.. but if you're not using it, why keep it in the case? :o (besides.. the fewer hardware in the case.. the smaller the chanse on error's. ;)

Yeah actualy i was thinking about removing it compleatly,But then that would leave me with a open slot at the back of the computer as i dont have the panel to cover it back up.

I think if i remove it then loads of dust will get inside the case:cool:

Theres still a use for these modems and thats setting it up for use as a Fax machine as ADSL can't manage this.

I would remove it that's what I did with mine..

Yeah i think im gonna remove it because now ive disabled it when i log on it keeps detecting new hardware:D

So i think il just remove it....However that will still leave me with a gap where the missing plate will be so dust will get in easier inside my pc.

Gotta find something to cover it up.

a missing pci panel doesnt matter, really ;) for example, you could switch the panels aroun,so the one closest to the grafic's cards fan isnt in there.. that way your grafic's card would be able to pull a bit more cool air in ^_^ (theoretically :o )

Some people purposely take out all their panels. It all depends on your cooling setup, but you should be perfectly fine.

i disable computers with modems, if im upgrading them 2 DSL/Cable, and take the card out....

cause theres no use of it in there, if it's not gonna be used..

Alright people,

Il do what Archangel said...

Great idea!

Thanks;)

Ok i removed the unused pci card and everythings fine.:)

I still dont like having a missing panel there though because i think more dust will get in the case but we will see.

I dunno if its keeping my Graphics card cooler because it has no sensors so i cannot monitor its temps but i should think more air is getting to it.

It shouldn't gather much more dust. Besides, you can always do a quick clean with compressed air.

I have been missing one for like 2 years now on one of mine and I dont notice anymore dust the normal on there its not a big deal really.

Thats good then,I hope it doesnt anyway:D

I usualy do my case out every month just to keep it clean as dust builds up quite quick in our house.

We are forever cleaning:o

remove it and buy a blanking plate for under a quid at pc world or somewhere similar(maybe even a local friendly repair shop may let you have one.) or why not fill the now empty pci slot with a usb card for about a tenner and give yourself a few more usb or even firewire ports:) ps: it's not so much to stop dust getting in(as your fans suck in dust unless filtered anyway) as to keep a sealed system case to allow the air flow through your case work as you want it without a vaccuum leak from a big hole at back of case, which is why you shouldn't run your system without the side panel on thinking it will keep it a lot cooler. unless you blast a great big desktop fan in of course.
