update a 56k modem with broadband?

I was given an old desktop with a 56k modem for free. Is there any way to update with a Ethernet plug to be able to connect it to a broadband internet? If so, how? Bare with me, I know very little about this kind of stuff.

If the MB doesn't have an ethernet port already, you put one of these in it.

^ That. The one at the bottom is especially good, because the older computer probably won't have USB 2.0.
