update service missing

Hello all. I have an issue that is above my ability and need some help. I have a dell desktop with Windows 7 64bit. Noticed no updates since June 2013. Tried to update and received a message that the service was not running. Checked services and Windows update is missing. This PC had no antivirus. Cleaned up with malewarebytes and adwcleaner. PC works OK now, but needs to be updated. Also, when I tried to turn on the firewall, I got 0x80070424 and if I try to go back to a restore point I get 0x800423F3. I goggled it and found so many variations so I thought I better post it here since I have always received good advice on this site in the past.

Thank you John. Glad you responded. I will try it in the morning. The PC is at another location. Thanks again. Will post outcome.

Ran your suggestion. I can now enable the Windows firewall and update. When I do updates, I get a lot of failures and then at restart it says reverting changes. I ran Windows update readiness tool as well as windows update troubleshooter. Not sure where to go from here. I noticed on the Repair Tool you suggested had a Repair Windows Update. Its #16. Since I'm not familiar with the tool, I wanted to ask if you think that might help? Or if you have any ideas as to what to do?

I ran #16. Still getting the configuring failed and reverting changes message. I have several fixit's from Microsoft as well as Update readiness tool. Also tried update in a clean boot. Still no go. Any ideas? I can't seem to find anything outside of what I have listed.

Have you tried updating a few at a time to see if its one particular update causing the issue?

Well, I was able to get all updates installed except for the following:

kb2685811 Kernel Mode Driver Framework V1.11 Error 8007007E
kb2864202 Security Update for USB drivers Error 8007007E
kb2754670 Microsoft Works Error 646

Found stuff on the web. Some I have done. Others, I have not, mainly because they say to do things I am not comfortable with and I not sure about the source. That is why I come here. One thing suggested was to do a repair with the disk. Of course there is no disk. If you think this may be a good suggestion, where would I be able to get a disk that is trust worthy? Or do you have any more ideas?

Yeah sorry about that. I didn't have any more ideas but to reinstall windows. Wouldn't worry too much about those updates that wouldnt install.

Thanks John. I think I will let it be for now.

Will be working on backing up options this weekend with a fellow student to learn more. I need to understand more about this so I can cover myself when working on PCs.

Thanks again.
