Updating BIOS with all new components

Ok I'm new here so if I can find more info on this someone please redirect me.

I just did my first computer build including: Asus P5B motherboard, 1GB osz ddr2 800 (x2) , core2 duo 2.4Mhz cpu, and a nVidia 8800gts, my cd drive is nothing special and my harddrive isa non-SATA seagate 80GB.

I hooked everything up and it boots up, goes through a system scan and then either freezes or reboots. I can get to bios, and I've had a few computer-savy friends look at it already. I know the MB is good because this is the second one. My hard drive is freshly formatted and i installed a copy of windowsXP home w/ ServicePack2 when hooked up to my other computer.

I need help getting everything to work together. - I'm not exactly sure what needs to be updated in BIOS - i also have NO floppy drive.

Much thanks in advance.

The update is for the bios not in it. What an update does is reprogram the system bios version. The programming is loaded into non voilitile ram while being stored on the one or more eprom chips that are read only types. You first would have to go to http://support.asus.com and use the selector for the type of product, series, and model number then followed by the type of support.

In most cases you can create a bootable cd where in many cases you can use a WinFlash tool. You first want to review the user manual for instructions on how to update the bios on that model board. You know the board is good due to that being the second one? Don't count on that if the board itself proves later to have a defect. Besides a bios update a flaky unstable power supply will alos cause headaches!

Are you saying that you installed XP when the hard drive was in a different computer and then put the drive in this one? Unless the motherboards were the exact same then thats why the computer won't boot. You can't install windows on a different machine and then put the drive in the one you are using it in. Do a fresh install from the computer you are gonna be using it in.

some motherboards can update the bios in windows. it may or may not have that option with your mobo.

On newer AMD model boards you will often see the EZFlash bios mentioned when looking over the specifications. Many of the updates already have a WinFlash included where you simply follow the instructions if included in a zip file along with it or simply double click on the file. In either case the file is usually downloaded or unpacked to the root directory.
