This is a computer Ive had it since 2005 and I feel like it needs a little update with all the new technology. Its primarly used for lots of gaming, music, and movies. FPS (Doom 3 & Half Life 2) and MMO's (Matrix online/Final Fantasy XI). Thanks for in advance for your help. I have like 600 USD to spend at the max.

Core 2 Duo? vista? Quad core? Im still living with a 2.8Ghz and im happy. pick out the things you want and well help

EDIT: I doubt he'll want another system when he got a brand new case... just update the mobo and cpu

Well I want a new video card. I heard te new n-vidias are pretty good. I think a CD2 E6600 would work, I heard you can oc those kinda high. Obviously a new MOBO probably a new gigabyte. Hopefully one that can take the new upcomming quads. Probably buy another gig of ram.

Hey Chupa, you know I've been searching to build a new desktop.
I have looked at hundreds of low end, cheap MOBO's and none of them have had bad feedback like that one.
You obviously know alot more about computers than I do.
Why is the feedback on that MOBO that bad ?

Mostly for the jmicron controler and the fact that's picky with memory's but you could just change it to a gigabyte or an asus either one will work

the least i would do with that pc is upgrade the video card with the best the pc can take and maybe toss in another gig of ram.

however, with multicorecpus , pci-e and ddr2 ram now available the pc will get old fast and quite slow compaired to modern computers. the least you need to convert your current pc to a core 2 duo system is a new motherboard, ram, and cpu.

these can be gotten for under $500 total. could even get a motherboard that can support core 2 duo and p4 to avoid replacing the cpu yet. might even be able to find one that uses ddr ram to avoid replacing the ram, although you can easily get 2gb of ddr2 for only $50

The gig of ram is not needed, as I am living off of XP Pro with 512 MB, but IT will definetely speed up things... and I second upgrading the video card. Yes nvidia has been going up... havent heard alot good things from ATI lately...

I have to disagree with you Oscaryu1, i saw a HUGE change in speed of gaming, music, multitasking when i upgraded from 512mb to 1gb ram...

Well that might be true =) sorry bout that... I never had 1Gig of RAM in my life... maybe next year? =( on a really tight budget.... got generic parts
