My laptop is running wacko can you please see if everything is ok or if there is a problem needing fixing. Windows xp sp2 have an update to do and for some reason it will not install or even why it is wanting to install - says it is sp1 and I have sp2

microsoft.net framework 2.0 service pack (KB110806)
microsoft.net framework 3.0 service pack (KB929300)

SP1 is one thing you don't want and shouldn't even be seeing for XP at this time. SP1 for Vista the latest version is still in beta form at the moment. The only SP1's are either for other versions like the server editions or for an MS office product of some type.

Net framework 3.5 is also available for separate installation and not seen in the updates.

My system

I have and doubled checked windows xp home edition with sp2 and do not understand why is windows update giving me updates for xp sp1 - how can I make windows update give me the sp2 updates for windows xp.

Look over the add/remove programs section in the control panel to select the show all updates option. See if SP2 is listed. If not you can download that as well as the beta for SP3 now seen at MS or Softpedia.

For SP2 you can download that from the XP Pro development site at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Or at Softpedia for the 266mb service pack at http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Windows-XP-SP2-RTM.shtml Simply click on the red download button seen there.

SP3 Candidate Release RC2 is currently seen at two sites one being seen at http://www.soft32.com/Download/Free/Microsoft_Windows_XP_Service_Pack_3/4-123572-1.html or at the MS download page seen at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...99-12af-42b2-aab1-b969a62c68a7&DisplayLang=en

You will note the four different sizes with 324.5mb being the latest beta adding in the latest security updates. You are better off waiting for the final version however.

One quesion here would if you installed XP with an older release and later installed SP2 or did that come included with a more recent copy? I didn't see anything in the log there that would explain any particular problem except going for an update of Adobe Reader 8.2 at http://2008-official.com/pdf/

It sounds more like something knocked out or simply made the SP2 updates inactive now seeing prompts for SP1 if you are using an older release of XP there.

One thing to try is turning off the auto update feature and go to the support site directly. Once there choose the custom not express option for hand picking the updates you need rather then seeing everything at once go on.

Do you have Net framework 1.1 and 2.0 already installed? The 1.1 is mandatory for a good number of newer video cards and other devices. 2.0 and 3.0 will be seen with the updates if not already on.

just checked

Do you have Net framework 1.1 and 2.0 already installed? The 1.1 is mandatory for a good number of newer video cards and other devices. 2.0 and 3.0 --- yes I have this

I went to check for ad and remove for sp2 and it does not show up in the list yet my systems info says its there and when I go to download site it also says I have it ???? should I redownload it.

question - if I download sp2 will it also get rid of updates in my ad and remove for sp1 --- I do not want to lose more room on my c drive I do not have much there till I can get that drive partitioned larger.?????

Did you check the show all updates option? SP2 is mainly a roll up of a good deal of updates and fixes that came out between SP1 and SP2's release. The updates in it replace some things due to being the progressive update while others are simply additional items.

The Net Framework updates are not SP1 there however but separate items by themselves. I saw 2.0 in the log and was simply asking iif you knew if the 1.1 version was on or not. 2.0 is still somewhat as optional as 3.0 for XP. SP2 will simply add more on not remove previous updates unless updating what is already on.

but if the update to sp2 takes up more room on my drive then I will get it after I have my drive increased in size,to small right now, thanks for the info guys

If you are replacing the current drive some time soon simply turn off the auto update feature to avoid continually seeing the notification for the time being. If you are simply repartitioning the drive in now like removing a second partition you may as well as plan a entirely fresh install of everything once that is done. The updates will still be at MS.
