The installation may have not been complete seeing all setup files copied fully to the drive. Sometimes it may even be necessary to simply delete rather then simply reformat the original primary since Windows prefers a fresh new one as a rule.
As for any hardware problem like a worn hard drive or even a memory problem those are quite possible on any older system. Besides a drive wipe to see a new primary created you may want to run memtest as well as a drive diagnostics utility from the manufacturer to see if either is seeing problems.
